AT News Report

KABUL: Lifting blanket from another case of corruption in the US-led coalition troops’ funded projects in Afghanistan, the US Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) in its recent report said that a police training center built with around half a million dollar in Central Maidan Wardak province started ‘melting’ just four months after completion.
The SIGAR report said that the building was not constructed in accordance to contract requirements. The report said that SIGAR also found evidence that the contractor had cut back on building materials.
The report said that the $456,669 complex needed reconstruction because it deteriorated to the point that it was unsafe.
It added that the bricks used in the building were mostly made of sand and the roof was also not properly sloped to allow water to drain. SIGAR said, just four months after its completion the building started melting down in the rain.
Investigators called the project not only an embarrassment, but a waste US taxpayers’ money. They said that the Afghan government is rebuilding the facility itself.
The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) is charged with the task of tracking fraud, waste, and abuse in the US projects in Afghanistan.
